Earlier this week, we shared that due to the escalating conflict with Iran, we’ve had to postpone our summer trips to Israel. While our return to Israel is on hold, our work — building Jewish community and preparing for the future — has never felt more urgent. And even in this moment of uncertainty, the spirit of HMI endures — because this community is about more than a trip.
Just ask Jeremy Weitz, a newly postponed participant from Washington, DC. Read on for his reflections on the HMI family he and his husband have already created.

This Thursday, I was supposed to board a plane to Israel with a cohort of 20 other couples from the DC area through Honeymoon Israel. It was a trip I had been eagerly anticipating—a chance to explore the land rich with Jewish history, deepen my understanding of my husband’s religion and culture, and build community with the other couples on this journey. As someone in an interfaith marriage and still exploring Judaism, this was more than just a vacation; it was a deeply personal step forward in my spiritual journey of understanding.
But, as sometimes happens, the path was unexpectedly altered. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran has led to the decision to postpone our trip. Though I was disappointed, I also recognize the wisdom and care in Honeymoon Israel’s decision to prioritize our safety and well-being. The thoughtful and deliberate approach they’ve taken in rescheduling this trip speaks volumes, and I’m deeply grateful for that.
Even though our travel plans have been put on hold, the sense of community we’ve built already is something that can’t be disrupted. Our WhatsApp group has been a constant source of support, filled with uplifting messages, excitement for the future, and shared anticipation. In these uncertain times, it’s been a reminder that the connections we’ve started to make are meaningful and strong, and they will only deepen as we wait for the chance to travel together.
During this time of waiting, I’m excited to continue building this community with my fellow cohort members…in person…and on WhatsApp. I look forward to engaging more deeply with everyone between now and when we can reschedule the trip.
In the end, this pause is just that—temporary. While our journey to Israel is delayed, I am reminded that the road to deeper understanding and connection is never a straight path. Sometimes, the most meaningful moments of growth and transformation happen during the waiting, the anticipation, and the in-between.
Just as the Jewish people have faced countless trials and disruptions throughout history, we too are called to embrace the moments of waiting with faith, patience, and hope. The ultimate destination—both in this journey together to Israel and in my personal exploration of faith—is still ahead, and the lessons along the way are just as significant as the arrival.
I can’t wait to experience Israel together when the time is right, but for now, I’m looking forward to deepening the community and connections that will make our eventual journey even more special.
