Tu B’Av – August 18-19, 2024

Tu B’Av, which translates to the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Av, was an ancient day of joy, serving as a matchmaking opportunity in the Second Temple period. The Talmud (a central Jewish text) tells us that the unmarried “daughters of Jerusalem would go out in white clothes” and “dance in the vineyards [under the full moon]” to find a partner.

The holiday went unnoticed for many centuries. In recent decades, modern Israelis brought it back into observance with festivals of singing and dancing, a sort of Jewish Valentine’s Day.
